Our Story
Azores Roots began as a research project within the Master's in Tourism Destination Development at the University of the Azores. What started as an academic inquiry into genealogical tourism became something larger: a conviction that the 1.5 million descendants of Azorean emigrants deserve more than a guided tour of their grandparents' island — they deserve a real way back to the people, records, and places that are still, quietly, theirs. Azores Roots is the technology built to make that return possible.
Mission
Tourism, at its best, is not consumption — it is encounter. Too much of what passes for heritage travel today reduces a homeland to a backdrop: a photograph taken, a box checked, a story never actually heard. We built Azores Roots to resist that. Our mission is to turn genealogical curiosity into genuine connection — between descendants and the archives that hold their family's names, between visitors and the communities still living where their ancestors once did — without turning either into a spectacle. This is not a product designed to sell an island. It is infrastructure designed to diversify how the Azores are experienced, built with the rigor of an institution that takes both its history and its diaspora seriously.
